On a scale of 1 to 10, how grateful are you? Be honest. Is there room for improvement? Generally speaking, there’s always room for improvement.
Let’s start at the definition of gratitude: The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.
My favorite definition of gratitude is: The acknowledgement of kindness with thanks.
Oprah is quoted as saying “The single greatest thing you can do to change your life today would be to start being grateful for what you have right now.”
Let’s look at the BENEFITS OF BEING GRATEFUL:
- More energy, enthusiasm and alertness to positive
- Higher self-esteem and confidence
- improved immune system and overall health
- less stress, anxiety and depression
- more optimism and happiness
- better/more feelings of connection
- improved brain/cognitive power and stimulation
- decrease in headaches
What if….. you woke up tomorrow with ONLY what you were grateful for today?
Here are some ideas for you to implement that will improve your level of gratitude today:
Start a daily GRATITUDE JOURNAL. This is a very powerful tool in improving your life and relationships. When you wake up and give thanks for the gifts in your life, those gifts multiply. Now, tactical move: give thanks in advance for the things that you want in your life i.e. the power of attraction or manifestation ☺
Start each day with GRATITUDE MEDITATIONS. It’s easy enough to do and sadly, even easier not to do, so commit to doing this. Take a deep breath in and hold for 3 seconds then as you breathe out for 3 seconds give thanks for a gift in your life, your spouse, your family, your home, your success, your friends, your pets….. do this at least 3 times. This takes less than a minute before you even get out of bed.
Always SAY THANK YOU. There is an energy vibration that improves when gratitude is given and then comes back in a positive field, increasing and improving vibration/positive aura, which in turn invites or attracts even more positive to you. WRITE A LETTER OF THANKS to at least 3 people who have positively impacted your life. Very powerful! Do it, trust me.
REWRITE YOUR STORY if you’re living through difficulty in any area –economic, health, raising your kids….. then this exercise is exceptionally important and impactful for you. Say your area is in a terrible economic downturn and your business is struggling, you’re looking at closing your doors, you’re under great stress, its affecting every area of your life, your relationships, your sleep, your health, and your finances. Now, your re-write this negativity into a positive outcome: You are so grateful that you had saved for a rainy day and incredulously, the downturn has given you the time and drive to learn something new which turns out is your true passion in life. As you develop your new skill and turn it into a business, the money starts to flow but more than that, because you are living your true calling, you are far happier, less stressed than you ever were even prior to the economic nightmare; therefore, your relationships have improved tenfold and the future looks SO much better than you could have imagined. You are grateful beyond words or description.
MAKE A PARTNER APPRECIATION JOURNAL. Write daily things about your spouse/partner that you love, admire and appreciate. Do this for a month minimum, a year preferably and a lifetime ultimately. Then fasten your seatbelt because your relationship is about to light on fire to a degree that you never imagined!
PAY ATTENTION. When you see the sunrise, sunshine/blue sky, birds singing, butterflies fluttering, the ocean, the mountains….. are you consumed with the monkeys in your head telling you all the things that are wrong in the world or all the tasks that you still have to do today? STOP!! Feel the sun on your face, admire the beauty and say thank you.
Which leads me to talk to you about mindset or perception. Glass half full? Or half empty? As humans, we have the power to change. Change our body, change our relationships, where we live or work AND change our perception. It is a proven fact: You cannot live in gratitude and lack at the same time. Gratitude is a virtue, much like a muscle, when you stretch and work it, it gets stronger and grows leaving lack, envy and negativity weak and far far behind.
In conclusion, I would like to share a story that my business coach shared one morning. She shared that she woke up on the wrong side of the bed and was not having a good morning. She went on to talk about her past and how she viewed the world and her relationships from a place of feeling like she was doing all the giving (martyrdom). Then she shared that she, in her past relationship was miserable and …… (lol, ready?) she, in turn was a bitch. She then told us how she changed that around with gratitude. She stated that you cannot live in gratitude and be a bitch at the same time! I love that! Brutal honesty. That just may be….. your new mantra! With much love!
